ME research programme on battery spans from fundamentals to outcome based achievements. At on hand, we focus on basic research developing novel concepts and electrode materials for lithium-ion battery and sodium-ion battery, and the other hand we focus extensively on applied research developing proto-types of various battery cells close to industry standards without compromising impactful publications. For this purpose, ME department has taken a lead in translational battery research at FoE in close collaboration with industries including Samsung (Korea), Molicel (Taiwan), Li-Cell (China), Guoxuan (China), etc. A state-of-the-art pilot line is set-up by ME department with the funding support from NUS for fabrication of commercial type large format (18650 and pouch) battery cells, with the aim of developing local capabilities for prototyping high performance lithium-ion batteries and sodium-ion batteries.
Several colleagues in ME department address key issues of battery research such as developing cathodes, anodes, high voltage/non-flammable electrolytes, eco-binders, separators, optimization and fabrication of battery cells using pilot line, module assembly, electrical and thermal management at module level etc., This approach is part of a larger effort by Centre for Energy Research and Technology (CERT), it also closely follows the energy roadmap of Singapore for climate change mitigation.
