As a Colombo Plan scholar, Dr Yap obtained his BESc with Deans honours in 1975 from the University of Western Ontario, Canada. Under an NUS post-graduate scholarship, he obtained his MEng from NUS in 1982 and his PhD from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, UK in 1987. He then joined the department as a faculty member. Before his graduate studies, Dr Yap had also worked for almost 3 years as a mechanical engineer in the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA).
